Joachim Birn

Senior Research Scientist
Los Alamos, NM

Education

Ph.D. Tech Univ. Berlin (West, when Germany was still divided)
Dipl. Phys., Tech Univ. Hannover, Germany

Joachim's work mostly concerns magnetotail dynamics, especially related to magnetic reconnection and substorms, using MHD simulations and particle tracing techniques to investigate plasma flows and particle acceleration mechanisms. Because of the similarity between substorms and solar flares, he occasionally applies his modeling to solar applications also. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and of Los Alamos Laboratory, where he has spent many years of research and still does as a Guest Scientist.
