Vivienne Byrd
Vivienne Byrd is a STEM librarian and public engagement advocate with over two decades of experience in outreach, informal learning, and partnership development. Her work focuses on making science more accessible through hands-on STEM education, participatory science, and place-based learning.
In her role as a Librarian III with the Los Angeles Public Library, Vivienne leads and oversees systemwide STEM and participatory science programming. In 2013, she was among the first cohort of eight librarians to pilot STEM storytimes and workshops for young learners and families in collaboration with the California Science Center, helping establish a model that demonstrated the important role public libraries can play in informal STEM education. In 2018, Vivienne developed and launched the Neighborhood Science initiative to engage communities in environmental learning and participatory science, including contributing observations to scientific research through the NASA GLOBE Program. She trains library professionals and actively seeks and builds partnerships with scientific, government, educational, and local organizations to expand access to STEM education and public engagement in science.
Vivienne also contributes internationally through the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), focusing on open science and sustainability, and has served in advisory roles for NASA-supported science education initiatives through partner organizations and other national efforts in STEM and climate literacy.
Outside of work, Vivienne enjoys traveling, hiking, and photography.
